A new study from the University of Michigan finds that certain drugs may be more likely to cause heartburn than others, including Nexium, Prilosec, Protonix, and Nexium acid blockers. But the research is just beginning.

The study, published online May 18 in the journalArchives of Internal Medicine, was funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health. The researchers included four high-risk people: an American woman who has had an acid reflux surgery, an American man with gastroesophageal reflux disease, and a diabetic who has been diagnosed with the condition.

In the men, the researchers found that Prilosec (esomeprazole) and Nexium (omeprazole) significantly increased heartburn, while Prilosec also increased the risk of heartburn in women. But the study found no significant difference in heartburn risk between the two groups. But there was, and that’s a problem.

“We’ve looked at a lot of different drugs and found no clear connection between these medications and heartburn,” said Dr. David B. Schuber, an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Michigan School of Medicine and the study’s lead author. “But this is the first to really study these drugs and find that they are associated with a higher risk of heartburn.”

The researchers used their analysis to compare the safety and efficacy of two different types of drug in the treatment of heartburn. In this study, the drug esomeprazole was compared to another drug known as NEXIUM. The results showed no significant difference in heartburn incidence among the two groups.

The other drug, omeprazole (omeprazole), was also compared to Nexium. Both drugs caused similar heartburn, but the study found no significant difference in heartburn risk among the four groups. But the study found that the combination of omeprazole and Nexium was more effective.

“It’s definitely an interesting finding because we can clearly predict which drug will cause a different outcome,” said Dr. B. C. J. Schumacher, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Michigan School of Medicine. “But it’s also a big question because it could be an extremely important finding, because we know that there is an excess of drug that is associated with a higher risk of heartburn.”
